So leo we had a fire drill…which brought up this conversation…
So the white guys in the office are wondering why here in Arusha (and after thinking I thought it applies to many African states..correct me if I’m wrong)…people feel the urge to state the obvious.. Like when you hear the disctintive bell of the fire alarm, someone says..”Thats the fire alarm”.
My personal favourite is when you enter a room and someone asks “Umeingia?” (Translation: Have you just come in?) I mean….thats kinda obvious right??? I mean, what kind of answer are you expected to give to that…
Another one….someone sees you and they ask “Ni wewe??” (Translation: Is it you???) I mean..what are you supposed to say to something like that???
When leaving the house..you’re asked “Unatoka??” (Translation: “You’re leaving?”)
So the Swahili teacher believes that Kenyans murder Swahili..and Apparently better Swahili is spoken in Nakuru than Coast….hmmm…thats seems strange right?? Then again…
Random thought: The other interns think Swahili is so cool..so have decided we must have a Swahili word of the day..so today’s word is “Wowowo”….this means you have some junk in your trunk..thats TZ slang for y’all. Thank me later
