Freaky eaters

November 27, 2008 · 13 Comments

Now myself and lovely over here are addicted to every cooking and eating program there is…her more than me..hehehe….from Freaky Eaters…to Come Dine with Me, Top Chef, Masterchef, Market Kitchen, Rosemary Shrager’s Cooking School, Hell’s Kitchen, Saturday morning cooking shows, Jamie’s cooking program (I adore this man..sigh) etc….

But of late I’ve started having a weird relationship with food..if not careful I may end up on Freaky Eaters..and need food counselling or something.

And Carlo before you ask, I’m NOT pregnant. I have just being having strange cravings…and shall share them here.

  • Cheese with Apples on Chapati. So I cut some apples..place them on a chappo..then melt some cheese ontop.
  • Cake with icecream…and then heap warm custard ontop. Too sweet for words…and unfortunately also a wo-wo-wo inducer!
  • Maltesers with popcorn. I always do this at the movies. Personally I don’t find this wierd..but the looks and comments I’ve gotten have made me wonder.
  • Crisps with yoghurt/ icecream. There is something about salt and sweet that does it for me.
  • Pasta and onions-I was seriously craving this once..and so proceeded to eat it.
  • Melt cheese in between slices of ham…with a sweet chilli dip.

I usually make good food…but after I eat one of my “experimentations”, I’m left wondering what’s wrong….I need to cure this the same way I need to cure my love for wearing LOADS of colours…at the same time..ama should I just accept that it’s a part of me (admitedly a VERY QUIRKY part) and be easy with myself??

Enough self reflection, back to work now…

Totally Random

November 24, 2008 · 18 Comments

Tipsy post…lemme start by admitting that…some yumminess..I’m all mellow..

And so proud of myself…for once didn’t feel the urge to text you-know-who (If you don’t know who…just go along with the story and pretend that you do know WHO)…I keep telling myself that its age…and I’ll get over these stupid moves when I’m older..if you’re happy in the present, what makes you YEARN for the past?

I was actually thinking about it now…what makes you feel the urge to text/ call when tipsy??? I admit to having some of the most random conversations ever!! But now…today..I actually refrained..and watched re-runs of Sex and the City….never used to watch it..but I’m in love..off to get the box-set tomorrow :) (I’m more of a CSI, Bones, Numb3rs, Law and Order Type of girl)….only prob is…they don’t show affection on CSI…

Do you…

  • Talk to yourself (often and without embarassment)?
  • Smile…and giggle occassionally….all to yourself?
  • Had random thoughts about loved ones(family..friends)…and texted/called to tell them (no matter what time of day it was, or how crazy it sounds)??
  • Still consider some people close to you..even though you haven’t spoken to them for ages?

Errrmmm…even if you don’t…don’t feel too bad :)

Playlist:

  • For once not listening to music…but CSI Las Vegas in the background.

The village…..school…etc

November 23, 2008 · 10 Comments

Bit of a nostalgic mood tonight…

Typical day in the village….

Wake up early in the morning to the sound of Kyuk music blasting from Kameme or Coro FM….listen to the sounds of the birds outside my window…sun streaming through…

Go to kitchen…find cucu listening to her music while sipping some tea…go make breakfast…She thinks I’m skinny (hehehe)…and wants to fatten me up..so usually will tell me how the chickens laid some marvellous eggs..and I should indulge in one..or 2…with tea (with that creamy milk..yum!)…bread..butter…fruit…by the time I’m done I feel like a stuffed goose!

Do the chores for the day…arguing over the radio….from my Grannie’s Kameme….to my cousin’s RnB..and my Rock/Neo-Soul…

At some point….walk down to the river to get the cows….come back and milk them…I honestly didn’t think milking cows was hard like that..ama maybe its because I have soft city girl hands…

Go to the shamba…..cut Napier grass to feed the animals…harvest potatoes for supper…maize for roasting later on as we cook…sugar cane…yum!

Settle down to make dinner…and make sure to make enough for unexpected visitors……like the son of the headmistress of the Teaching College..who showed up one night…and tried to “woo” me…by trying to convince me to go for a walk after dinner….in the village…where it’s dark..no street lights…and LOADS of bushes…yeah right!!!

And the boy who fell for my sister…and would tell everyone that he was going to marry her….and then was caught trying to steal a goat from my Grannie…

Then when all is nice and calm…lie on the sofa to watch my cousin’s current Spanish soap..while listening to Grannie tell stories from when she was young…like how she had “seen and liked” my Grandad before he saw her :)

Grannie randomly announcing that she was off on a mission to Lodwar…… the next morning..:)

Being given “Bad eyes” by some girls who didn’t know who I was…who didn’t understand that the boy they were into  was my UNCLE…..one of my best friends ever…family! Too funny..this man does not understand why so many girls are after him…guess some nice guys do WIN at the end huh??

The drama caused when the guy looking after my parents’ farm refused to be fired by my mom…saying he could not take instructions from a WOMAN…what! Needless to say he still got fired..You cannot mess with my mom.

Good times those…can’t wait to go back…

Onto other news:

  1. Got my phone..happily..at least I don’t have to struggle to read a message 5 hours after it was sent…among other woes..
  2. So we did our presentation last Friday…and it rocked :) ..I was initially apprehensive…we’re supposed to dress a bit more formally for presentation..but my groupmates (lovely people btw) interpreted this in their own way…the guy shows up in skinnier than skinny jeans, nice black shirt..which was ruined by the addition of a sheer black blouse-like top…think Prince..and you won’t be far off..he even had on black eye liner. The girl on the other hand had a see through top…oh dear…but still..we rocked!!! happiness :)
  3. This was the scene in class this Friday….2 groups do a presentation…bit of a debate..then the class was allowed to ask questions…so this guy asks his question..which wasn’t understood by the group..and when asked to repeat..he says “Sure I’ll DUMB it down for you….if it’ll make it easier for you to understand”…My jaw literally fell! The class gasped…and the idiot laughed with his friends as if he had said something really funny…why he had to be so rude I have no clue. Good thing he didn’t do anything like that when we presented….I’d have thrown something at him!
  4. Feeling Christmas fever yet?? Some people’s houses already look like monstrous street lights…what possesses people to do things like that???

Playing:

  • I’m cool- Anthony Hamilton ft David Banner
  • Come over (remix)- Estelle ft Sean Paul
  • Anytime and Any place- Janet Jackson (Why she can’t stick to songs like this I don’t know)
  • Pot Belly- Freshly Ground

House of Flying Daggers

November 5, 2008 · 6 Comments

I want to be back home…just so that I can enjoy the public holiday kesho..

Moving on to unrelated news….House of Flying Daggers.

So I have moved from my usual Bollywood and Nollywood flicks to something in the Wuxia genre.

This is one good film…you can read the synopsis here.

Its full of colour, the costumes are amazing…the action as usual is pure art. I know it was slated for falling short of other great films in this genre but I still enjoyed it.. Its perfect for a dull, grey afternoon. One of those days when you have nothing to do..or simply want to do nothing but sit down and escape from reality for a bit.

There are some things I have noticed in these movies.

  • Element of suspence- You are usually left with a big fat at the end of the movie. I mean, sometimes it seems like they just forgot to finish the movie or something.
  • The hair blowing in the wind- This applies to both the men and women. There is usually a fight scene where the hat or headdress is cut off/ blown off..to reveal the hair..which is amazing..long and black (I’m jealous of the hair incase you were wondering)
  • The costumes..and traditions..so elaborate and usually so colourful. I love it..this is best seen in The Curse of the Golden Flower…too amazing! You can actually picture yourself there…and if you’re watching this from a big screen with good sound..I have one word…Bliss!!

  • Some of the men are pretty. I mean, from a distance you can’t differentiate them from the women..coz they are so slim and graceful.

(This is Takeshi Kaneshiro and Zhang Ziyi in House of Flying Daggers)

  • Why does someone have to die? I’m yet to watch a happy-ending movie. I simply can’t understand some of the deaths..like the death of the main female character Mei (Zhang Ziyi). Mei was loved by 2 men; Leo and Jin. But when Leo discovered that she had fallen for Jin, he stabs her because she was planning to run off with Jin. Then she turns around and says that she knew all along Leo would try and kill her….I mean what is that?? If you know some man is out there trying to kill you, why would you run towards him? Doesn’t make sense to me!
  • The women are gorgeous. Different from the beauty of Bollywood queens though. Some of my fav actresses:

Zhang Ziyi- She was in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, House of Flying Daggers, and Memoirs of a Geisha

Gong Li- Curse of the Golden Flower

I’ve realised I like wuxia films with a bit of a love story…breaks the monotony of the fighting..note: I said love story..not sex scene..there is a difference :)

Now off to find Hero

Playing:

  • You bring me joy- R. Kelly
  • One more day- New Edition

In other news………

In Mombasa, two giant burgers — one called Obama and the other, McCain — prepared by the staff of Sarova Whitesands beach resort, will be the highlight of celebrations ushering in the new US president.

According to the hotel’s general manager, Mr Mohammed Hirsi, the special double-decker hamburgers were prepared to commemorate the event.”

This made my day..so apart from the beer, ahem…there are plenty of Obama-inspired cuisine to choose from now.

I love it! This even tops the people who have been “Donating their status updates to get out the vote for Barack Obama today” on FB!

Love it!!!

And I have refused to Kenyan radio till this election is over…

Playing:

  • Spinners- Working my way back to you babe

(JLS did a wicked version on X-Factor..I loves them!!! They have my vote esp the lead singer..and the tallest guy..so cute!!!)
