Bit of a nostalgic mood tonight…
Typical day in the village….
Wake up early in the morning to the sound of Kyuk music blasting from Kameme or Coro FM….listen to the sounds of the birds outside my window…sun streaming through…
Go to kitchen…find cucu listening to her music while sipping some tea…go make breakfast…She thinks I’m skinny (hehehe)…and wants to fatten me up..so usually will tell me how the chickens laid some marvellous eggs..and I should indulge in one..or 2…with tea (with that creamy milk..yum!)…bread..butter…fruit…by the time I’m done I feel like a stuffed goose!
Do the chores for the day…arguing over the radio….from my Grannie’s Kameme….to my cousin’s RnB..and my Rock/Neo-Soul…
At some point….walk down to the river to get the cows….come back and milk them…I honestly didn’t think milking cows was hard like that..ama maybe its because I have soft city girl hands…
Go to the shamba…..cut Napier grass to feed the animals…harvest potatoes for supper…maize for roasting later on as we cook…sugar cane…yum!
Settle down to make dinner…and make sure to make enough for unexpected visitors……like the son of the headmistress of the Teaching College..who showed up one night…and tried to “woo” me…by trying to convince me to go for a walk after dinner….in the village…where it’s dark..no street lights…and LOADS of bushes…yeah right!!!
And the boy who fell for my sister…and would tell everyone that he was going to marry her….and then was caught trying to steal a goat from my Grannie…
Then when all is nice and calm…lie on the sofa to watch my cousin’s current Spanish soap..while listening to Grannie tell stories from when she was young…like how she had “seen and liked” my Grandad before he saw her
Grannie randomly announcing that she was off on a mission to Lodwar…… the next morning..:)
Being given “Bad eyes” by some girls who didn’t know who I was…who didn’t understand that the boy they were into was my UNCLE…..one of my best friends ever…family! Too funny..this man does not understand why so many girls are after him…guess some nice guys do WIN at the end huh??
The drama caused when the guy looking after my parents’ farm refused to be fired by my mom…saying he could not take instructions from a WOMAN…what! Needless to say he still got fired..You cannot mess with my mom.
Good times those…can’t wait to go back…
Onto other news:
- Got my phone..happily..at least I don’t have to struggle to read a message 5 hours after it was sent…among other woes..
- So we did our presentation last Friday…and it rocked
..I was initially apprehensive…we’re supposed to dress a bit more formally for presentation..but my groupmates (lovely people btw) interpreted this in their own way…the guy shows up in skinnier than skinny jeans, nice black shirt..which was ruined by the addition of a sheer black blouse-like top…think Prince..and you won’t be far off..he even had on black eye liner. The girl on the other hand had a see through top…oh dear…but still..we rocked!!! happiness
- This was the scene in class this Friday….2 groups do a presentation…bit of a debate..then the class was allowed to ask questions…so this guy asks his question..which wasn’t understood by the group..and when asked to repeat..he says “Sure I’ll DUMB it down for you….if it’ll make it easier for you to understand”…My jaw literally fell! The class gasped…and the idiot laughed with his friends as if he had said something really funny…why he had to be so rude I have no clue. Good thing he didn’t do anything like that when we presented….I’d have thrown something at him!
- Feeling Christmas fever yet?? Some people’s houses already look like monstrous street lights…what possesses people to do things like that???
Playing:
- I’m cool- Anthony Hamilton ft David Banner
- Come over (remix)- Estelle ft Sean Paul
- Anytime and Any place- Janet Jackson (Why she can’t stick to songs like this I don’t know)
- Pot Belly- Freshly Ground

Hey, good to have you back!!
Glad you have such fond memories of your shagz. Mine are more like nightmares. I guess cows aren’t fun, if you’re forced to take care of them day in day out hehehehe

The only memories I have of shaggz is when I used to get freakishly sick. Nearing death kind of sickness. All the time, therefore spoiling everyone’s good time. My folk decided to stop sending us there. If you ask me, witchcraft was involved.
‘. . . . I’ll dumb it down for you. . . .’ The guy had a nerve. If he told me that, he wouldn’t have known what disfigured him!
Oh no! It’s christmas!

U make me miss my home… and the sound of birds int he morning. I think that is the sound of life as opposed to honking cars.
For some reason Christmas is just another day to me. I don’t see the reason for all the hullabaloo. (And yes, I am a firm Christian, I’m just detached from somethings.)

‘the rural dispatch’ haha, i like it..reminds me i have an unposted post during post election violence where i was holed up in shags…
i feel you on the presentation part which reminds me i have one this week. in the past i’ve pulled through such and i made the fools out of the buffoons plus their ‘pseudo-intelligence’.
i like the template by the way.

My mom loves the song “Green grass of home”.
When I read this, that’s what came to my mind.

urban people still experience this rural lifestyle…how it feels like another life and really really makes me long for it(or is it just a dream and when i wake up to reality i will run away)…oh well..excellent read

I miss that village life. I havent been to either of my …for a very long time. For many years, I havent even spent a night there. What I would want most when there is kienyeji chicken soup and paw paws and offcourse some pure clean muratina or another one called makavo made from paw paws.
