Yeii I is a graduate..

July 6, 2009 · 27 Comments

I finally feel human…..or rather, my legs and heart finally feel as though they belong to me :) I’ve been up and down lately…so a quick re-cap of whats been going on..

Week 1: Result time

So this was me waiting for my results with my heart in my throat. I was so scared…of completely failing..I had even composed different scenarios of how I would tell the parents that their money and support had gone to waste…composed what I was going to do upon finding out I had failed..(yes this occupied my mind for a while)…I got a couple of panic attacks….(yes thank you to my beloveds)…SoI finally checked…and wooossaaaad! Phew!

Week 2: Graduation

In my panic during the “waiting for results” phase, I completely forgot to buy a graduation outfit…so I took myself and XY to the shops..and fell in love with a dress…it was a simple grey shift dress…that emphasized the waist..good stuff! Couple of useless arguments here and there…(note to men: If you are dragged on a shopping expedition by a girl, be enthusiastic…or face the consequences of an emotional, hormonal, anxious-to-find-the-right-kind-of-dress girl. Oki?)

So we sorted my outfit out (my mood improved along with it)..got a clutch purse…and I was set! Managed to clean the house before the parents arrived (and begged the housemates not to mess it up in the meantime)….I was ready!

The day itself? Absolutely amazing!! I woke up so early!! It was 5am..and the sun was out…I was sleepy but couldn’t sleep..nerves or excitement, or a mix of the two…and then, the shower went cold on me in the middle of me “tra-la-la-ing” in the bathroom!!!!!!! Didn’t I scream like a banshee, and wake the housemate to go fix the boiler! I hate this bloody boiler! Its like it knows when you have something important to do…then it chooses to eff it up by breaking down in the middle of the shower…NKT!!!!!!

Anyhu, got ready, made myself pretty pretty…and went to get  my gown and tickets and all that…while tweeting all the way of course (shame face…its addictive!)

Anyhu, parents and the XY showed up..and I graduated..Woop! Took a couple of pics (ok loads of pics, by the school, on the grounds..with my classmates..etc)..Parents grinning all the while. Champagne reception after the ceremony…(means more photo taking) and then it was off for lunch…lovely lovely…

Did I say thank you to all those who send me lovely wishes? If I didn’t..thank you!!!!

Wine in the garden with my housemate when it was over..I was pleasantly tired out of my mind!

Walking with the parents:

They stayed for a week…and I walked for 8 hours every single day…and tweeted about it the whole time…from the pain (my legs are yet to forgive me), the carrying of heavy bags, the gossip sessions, endless cups of tea, endless icecreams to deal with the sunshine, enjoying mummy’s cooking (for real my dad and I gained weight from that week)….to trips to London (which requires a post on its own).. I have NEVER walked that much! EVER! Lol..exercise for sure….

In my foolishness I decided to go out during the weekend..knowing I had to wake up and walk the next day..ever walked when you’re slightly hangied? And the sun is out in full force? I would not recommend it..for realz..

I had so much fun with them despite all my moaning of my tired feets…..I saw places that I’ve never seen, despite me living in this country for 4 years…being a tourist is fun huh?

Anyhu, they left a few days ago…I need like a week to recover before I decide what to do with myself this holiday…

Jana there was a carnival in the park….fun…and then I spotted Mr Proposal with some extremely randomly dressed women, and walked off in the opposite direction as fast as I could….I don’t need any more drama from him anymore…he still sends random emails “ati I was just saying hi, hope you’re keeping well”…Hmmphh! Go away already! Anyhu I digress….what I meant to say was…we need a carnival in Nairobi…ama does one happen and I have no clue about it? (This is what I get for spending my holidays in the village with cucu)…you know the way there are events like “Blankets and Wine” and the others? Wouldn’t it be awesome if there were cultural stands selling food and cultural artifacts as well? Kenyan (Nyam chom! Yum!) as well as non-Kenyan (think of all the restaurants in town, from Japanese, Chinese, Indian, Italian…etc) On a sunny day…that would be cool, yes?

    Thanks hun..

Why don’t you guys get that boiler fixed? Coz you’ve been ranting about it for months!
Its always getting fixed. They need to get rid of the old one and install a new one altogether

Good on you girl! Congratulations! Sounds like you had some serious fun, with the parents.
Thanks hun..and I did have fun..

Enjoy the freedom while it lasts. I discovered this employment thing is not all its made out to be. To be honest I am thinking of going back to school.
    I am enjoying :)

I think there’s a Nairobi Carnival, it just started like in the last year or so. I don’t think its much fun though pple just go walk up and down Koinange Street, have dancers doing their thing. And not many pple even show up anyway.
That doesn’t sound like much fun..

    Thanks..

    What does ‘randomly dressed’ mean?
Ok..in their case, they were wearing ALL the current trends at the same time….not a good look!

You right boyfulani this is a very happy post and it feels.

Congratulations girl. Parents, aren’t they just nice? God bless them!
Thanks girl….The parents were lovely! One cannot appreciate them enough!

They do start carnivals here. At least I know of msa. And then it dies within 2 years. Whats with us?
Lack of proper planning I think..

Yeah, extremely randomly dressed women, what’s that?
Girls who choose to wear ALL the trendy things they can find in ONE outfit always puzzle me..I don’t understand it..

  • pink m // July 7, 2009 at 12:41 pm | Reply

No no no!! Boys, if you offer to take a girl dress shopping (even if it’s under duress), you better be enthusiastic about it!! I know you didn’t drag no one anywhere, you asked, he agreeed…tsk tsk
    Preach PinkM!! :D

Oh! Where’s my manners!! Congrats for the umpteenth time Val!
    Thanks love..

Val…Congrats to you girl and all the best in whatever you want to do next…
    Thanks Mr Stone :)

As for you and Pink on the issue of dress shopping – LOL! XY can join my “I really don’t want to be here” men’s club. To hell with the enthusiasm….hehehe. Find me at the bar in the pub across the road. Whatever you buy is nice really – I’ll even leave you with my credit card if that will get me out of the dog house.
The card would help :D You know what? I can picture you saying the above..

…And let’s not start the “how do I look in this one?” conversation….(Note to my fellow brethren – It’s a lose lose situation for you…LOL! – keep away from that conversation at all costs)
There is NO way to avoid that conversation….for real. I think any man who manages to come out of it unscathed should write a manual to help the rest..

    • Darius Stone // July 10, 2009 at 7:29 pm | Reply

LOL Val – speaking of cards, I usually have to ask for mine as it seems to be in her purse most of the time. Not that she doesn’t have hers, but I think I lost my rights to my personal card when I sold away my rights to manage the household finances.

…And believe me experience has taught me to stay away from them shopping trips especially the impulse buying ones. There are reasons why I invested in a decent stereo system in the car (same reasons why I urge all married men to ensure they invest in a good and decent sofa…) A man needs a place to retreat..LOL!. A nearby pub most definitely will be a substitute.

And you best believe I’m an expert of avoiding that “How do I look in this one” conversation….LOL! It took time and patience, but I got the hang of it. It’s tactical…LOL! and the trick is that there’s a million ways to skin a cat – there’s lots more ways ‘er indorrs can keep smiling – but doing that “how do I look in this one” is most definitely not one of my fortes.

    Congratulations girl!

    @Darius Stone
You should get a variation of the answer to how I look.

Try..gorgeous, this one is it, that definitely brings out the best in you, hmm..this matches the color of your eyes, that one complements your figure(careful with this one). Avoid one-word answers like nice, cool, okay.

    • Darius Stone // July 15, 2009 at 10:59 am | Reply

See the issue there Savvy is that I would have a problem knowing which version to use for the moment and which one I used last time – and both of us know the effect of saying the wrong thing(read the version that mentions your figure) …LOL! You girls have a way of punishing us severely for such own goals that we hoof in under duress.

One survival technique I learnt from my dad (a dude with over 50 years experience in sidestepping landmines (inside joke if you consider that our nikcname for mum is The General) is the art of picking the fights you can handle and compensating for the ones you are destined to lose.

This “how do I look in this one” conversation falls straight into the category that lands you a few nights on the sofa – so its inevitable that I’ll sandbag you with my compensation technique.

    Where have

  • 3TOC // July 22, 2009 at 5:14 pm | Reply

Where have I been? Congratulations babe.

Thankfully you were walking while the sun shone- it could have been raining. Put yes, do put the legs up for a while.

Why oh why did you drag an XY dress shopping? I am with Mr.Stone on this one- the pub or some place elsewhere but not dress shopping with me. These are near-spiritual experiences. You really should not drag people who do not appreciate the art.

Again, where have I been? Congratulations.
